An Asbury Park firefighter is in critical condition after he was forced to bail from a burning apartment that flashed over Monday morning, according to The Asbury Park Press. Firefighter Jason Fazio, who turned 41 today, was transported by medical helicopter to St. Barnabas Burn Center with second-degree burns and fractured bones, Fire Chief Kevin Keddy told the newspaper. Fazio was the acting captain of his truck company for the shift as crews responded to the three-alarm blaze in the two-story apartment building at 418 Main Street. The fire completely gutted the second-story unit and caused fire and water damage to a Mexican restaurant on the first floor. No one was home during the fire. The 17-year veteran was in a room of the burning unit when it flashed over. He dove out from a second story window to escape the flames. The fire is being investigated and the cause of the fire is still being determined.
